External storage solution

Hey guys!

Slowly, but surely, we have started to upgrade our little 2-man operation, as we're starting to get more jobs (yay!). However, as such we are finding that our current workstation simply does not cut it anymore, especially in regards to storage. The thing is, however, that we cannot afford a big HP Workstation right now alongside with a proper storage solution plus upgrading with a new 10 bit monitor etc. So what we'll be looking for is upgrading our storage first, and then proceed with dedicated editing machines whenever we can afford it. However, I find that external storage is more difficult to buy than anticipated. It would, of course, be quite easy if I could just buy Thunderbolt. Everyone makes fast thunderbolt arrays of some sort. However, we're working with Windows on non-asus powered machines, so thats sadly not an option. As such, I need help to figure out what we should be buying. From what I've read, SAS is probably the way to go, but again, I'm not entirely sure.
Ideally, I would like for us to get around 12TB. As speed goes, I don't need it to be able to break 1000 mb/s or anything like that. We are working with 2k footage. On the rare occasion that we use 4k, we generally edit with proxies anyway.

So, any idea as to what I should be buying. I don't mind putting it together my self if that saves me some money; some sort of external enclosure, and then pick up some harddrives myself. That'll work. I also reckon I'll need a card of some sort to support this?

lastly, I should say that while I do want something which works, I'm not looking at the best and wildest setup imaginable, so don't bother with the 50k setups :D

Thanks in advance,

Jens
