external hard drive issue

i wonder if anyone can help me with this ?
i have a powerbook and a maxtor external hard drive, im using imovie to edit some footage ,and my macs internal hard drive is pretty much full to the brim from the rendering.
on my desktop i can see the external hardrive and when i click on the icon it shows 150gb available , i can also transfer files to it, but at the bottom of my imovie desktop it only displays the remainder of my internal drives memory (34mb !),so during rendering it stops due to lack of memory.
is there a way to get imovie to recognize and use the 150gb of space on the maxtor drive

You should just manually put all your iMovie files on the hard drive into a folder for iMovie projects. Once copied delete the iMovie files on the PowerBook HD (make sure you copy all the folders from your project!!) open iMove and choose open existing project and point to the external drive and it will start saving new files there also...hope this works

i always keep AT LEAST a gig available on my internal for swap. never let it get too low or you will notice a serious degrade in speed. you need space for virtual memory and swap space on any kind of machine, may it be unix or windows

cheers steve and zach, i ll have a fiddle with it when i get home tonight, i ll post how i do later on.
thanks
