External storage....... Any sugestions?

I need storage desperately! I was looking for something for the long haul and big...... I remember seeing a thread for a terrabyte external for under $1,000.... Anyone have any insight?

EVS sells a Lacie terabyte for 979

you might want to check with some of those build to order computer places though, possible you might a better deal.
 
big is great, but what if the drive fails?

maybe go less ambitious and get a 300gb, 500gb, etc. those sizes, a few . I'm sending back a 500gb d2..if that was my only drive, I'd be quite screwed. just a thought.

you should first utilize the other bay in your g5 if that is what you have. SATA is your friend. firewire can be flaky.
 
Pooh you are so right, I had a client's 500GB drive fail on me and when I recovered it, one partition was lost with 100GB on it... Clients bring me their own drives to edit with, so I can't back up all their data, and he had no backup. It took days to re-digitize all that footage, bring it from CD, edited masters, etc... It ended up costing him way more than it would have to just back up his data after every edit. If I could only afford two drives, I would buy 2 500GB and mirror them or use one for backup after every edit. Maybe buy a SATA internal for editing, and a 500GB external for backup.
 
The laptop I'm planning to buy (Dell Inspiron 9300) has a 1EEE 1394 firewire. Will this type of firewire work for the big drives you guys are talking about?
What is a SATA internal?
How much does a 500GB drive cost? I can buy a consumer level 260GB drive for $120 - is there any downside to these kind of drives?
 
ballyhoo, $120 is a great deal but it might not be a "good drive"..... do some research on the make.

Rush, do you sell internal drives? Also, do you sell 500 gig externals?
 
I use lacie drives like notebooks. I currently have seven and keep all of my projects on them. Great drive for the money. They sell them up to 2TB configs.
 
Hi Coffee, we sell lacie 500GB, and anything off the lacie list. We don't sell internals, I always go to Newegg for that. :thumbsup:
