I've always been a bit scared of Raid drives but realised how silly it is, and how simple to understand it is (1 is mirrored for protection, 0 is 50/50 for speed) I've now got interested and could do with some advice please.
Do y'all feel a Raid 0 drive is a valuable investment for editing? I know HD's can be a bottleneck and I plan on getting a I7 iMac soon so naturally am pondering what might slow it down. Or is a regular single drive going to be faster? I already have some drives so could set one of them up as render drive?
Likewise is a Raid 1 drive worth the cost - more money for half the storage seems a tough sell for me - I'm not doing much location backups and don't run anything 100% has to keep going at all costs (like an commerce site of whatever).
As it is I think my backing up is working ok - I burn the masters to blu-ray then copy them to a backup hd before putting them on my editing hd, getting pr422 files on that same editing hd and making my edit from them. I don't think I need a Raid 1 drive, if I do please educate me hehe!
So aye, is Raid 1 necessary for me, is Raid 0 going to make a tangible difference, esp considering the i7 is to come, or will a simple HD work?
(FYI I'll be going mostly FCP, er FCP 7 heh, and all the tasks that go with that).
