Appologies for the noobie question but if I don't want to record on the camera, are there a third party devices with hard drive that can store the recorded audio and sync the data in post production.

There are any number of such devices on the market ranging from the inexpensive consumer portables such the aforementioned Zoom H4n and similar costing a few hundeds of dollars, all the way up to fully professional field recorders such as the Zaxcom Deva or Aaton Cantar often found on professional feature shoots and costing 15 to 20 thousands of dollars. So the first questions are, what are you recording, how many channels do you need to record at once, will you have a dedicated sound mixer (the person, that is) on the set to operate it, and realistically what is your budget? Keep in mind you DO get what you pay for in terms of usability and quality.

If it's pro use - then the small Sound Devices units are the ones to go for.

2-channel - 702T
4-channel - 744T
8-channel - 788T

All the above have timecode.

If you don't need timecode, look at the 702 and the Nagra LB.

At a cheaper price (with timecode) the Tascam HD-P2 or Fostex FR-2 with timecode board.

I hope this helps.
