I don't seem to find that external recorder anymore... was it the AG-DV1DC or something? Someone said they stopped making it or that there was a new model coming out? Does anyone know it's status?

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

I'm using one right now on a movie as a backup. It does seem to be discontinued but I bought it 2 weeks ago from pro-tape in Austin TX.
Pro-tape.com. I think they have a couple more in stock. It works great and has a nice large screen. I have it mounted on top of my camera.

yes.. I dont know why they canned that thing, it is probally one of the coolest mini decks out there, a perfect match for the DVX and has many many uses.

Makes you wonder if they are coming out with a new model?

Just heard from the product manager for the DVX-100... she says it was discontinued, and that no there is no new model coming out...

that's a drag...

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

I'm also using a canon ZR80 on the B camera as a backup. It will do the same job and will record when you hit the button on the DVX.They are aroung $350 and small enough to mount on top of the camera.

Do you recall what they sold it for?

I like the idea of using a cheap camera as an alternative to a much more expensive deck.

One question though (for Z80 or Panasonic GS9 users): Can these cheap cameras deal with all of the different formats (24P, 24PA, Squeeze-mode) that the DVX has?

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

The 24p shouldn't be an issue. I used a Sony TRV11 and it it worked fine. Unfortunately the GS9 is unable to transmit the timecode over firewire (or at least the one I tried) Final Cut coudl see video and audio fine but never got the timecode so capturing would be a problem.

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

Yikes! I wonder if the GS9 loses the timecode with Premiere Pro?

Does anyone else know? Or how about with the Canon ZR80?

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

I use a Panasonic NV-GS50 and have no problem with Premiere Pro. I have a PAL and culd use 25p

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

Are you doing on the fly capture with the GS50 or are you giving it timecode to capture sections?

A lot of very cheap consumer decks are this way, they do not send time code because they are not capable of capstan control.

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

Well, when you can go out and get a cheap Panasonic camcorder for 325 at B&H and use that as a deck, it's probably hard for them to sell their $1000 VCR only decks. I'd probably still buy one just to have it, but is there really anything better about the DV1DC?

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

phd - do you, or anyone, know the american equivilant of Panasonic NV-GS50 is?
What is the cheapest option to get everything (timecode, etc.) on to my computer?
DV1DC, or is there a better camera possibility as a deck?

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

I'm curious too. I'm in the market to get a camcorder to use as a deck. I've started looking at the Canon ZR80 and the Sony DCR TRV22 -- the advantage of the Sony in my mind is that I can shoot "One Night in Paris" type stuff.

Any recommendations/thoughts?

Re: External recorder (AG-DV1DC?)

I just bought the Canon ZR80 as my deck. As a deck it's working great. The first thing I did was shoot some 24PA in squeeze mode to see how it handled it. It was able to play the footage back on its LCD no prob, and it transferred the recording to my computer just fine. I have a Wintel machine with XP & Premiere Pro 1.5: device control worked perfectly, no lost frames, and it handled the timecodes flawlessly. I doubt I'll ever use it to shoot with though. :)
