External Raid Enclosure

Hello Everyone,

I recently had a terabyte hard drive fail :( Luckily it didn't have any critical data on it, but I am rethinking my storage solution and wanted to get some advice here.

What I'm thinking is the best solution is to get an external raid enclosure that's hot swappable. I'd like it to have Firewire connectivity for my current computer as well as esata so that when I update my computers the enclosure will still be compatible. I have an Imac with the Firewire 400 and 800 ports that I would be connecting this to. I am an event shooter working in HD, so I need lots of space to back up and like the idea of having things mirrored in case a drive goes down. Here's an enclosure that I'm looking to pull the trigger on. Any thoughts? Is there a better solution that I'm missing?

Wow, that is really cheap. Kind of looks like the DROBO. Honestly, it doesn't quite inspire confidence in me, but that is probably based on the price point. Looks like it doesn't include any user interface to understand what is going on with the drives. Also sounds like from some of the user's comments that it takes a long time to spin up from 'sleep'. Probably not a good drive to edit from, but might be a decent cheap solution for redundant backup.

Let us know how it works out.

Keeganxt,

I'm not sure, I'd guess I'd have to look it up as I don't know what the difference is.

If you want a metal case that's a little more heavy duty, you might want to take a look at the 0 drive version of this RAID case. I've been using it for the past 4 months with four 1.5 TB drives that I installed, and it's been great. RAID5, super fast ( 180 MB/sec writes ), super quiet, and it handles all of the RAID config/rebuilding without a computer, so you can use it with any Mac or Windows PC.

You should look into prebuilt RAIDs from Caldigit, Dulce, G-Technology, iStorage Pro & the like.

If you really want to build one yourself, make sure that you build it around an Atto or Areca SAS controller. The cheaper Highpoint cards are total crap.
