External Preview for After Effects

Hello people,
I am not sure if this has been asked before, but I did check some few places though.
Well, I have After Effect 6.0 and I was wondering if someone could please provide a short tutorial on how to do an external preview with After Effect.
Well, what caused me to seek that form of preview is because After Effect preview is really slow on my system compared to my vegas 6.0. My vegas plays back like you just watching the footage on my camcorder while After Effect is like you playing back a clip that has over 10,000 frame drops.

So could someone tell me how I can make the preview on my AE better and also, how I can be able to preview my shots on my TV when I am using AE.

Thanks!.

Doing a firewire preview will not help speed up your preview time (and im not even sure if 6.0 has that feature i think it only applies to 6.5). In fact it may slow down your preview beacuse the computer has to work harder. After effects has to render every frame and is extremly render intensive unlike your NLE which is why its so slow, unfortunatly the only way to speed it up is get a faster PC with more ram or drop your preview resolution or use proxies for footage and dont have anything running in the back ground to optimise your system. Have a look through the manual for what i have just exlained should help.

Here is the "magic" formula for getting faster previews in After Effects.

Lower resolution+proxies+disk cache+region of interest+decent graphics card+draft resolution+fast processor+RAM+RAM+RAM+RAM+RAM!!!!

You're footage may be 25% of the original size and heavily pixelated, but, hey, at least it will be fast!

All jokes aside...RAM is the key. Go to the bookstore and read through the first couple chapter of After Effects 6.5 Studio Techniques, it has some great tips on optimizing your system to make AE faster. It does help too.

For the previews, only 6.5 has the ability to preview to a monitor via Firewire. I'd be curious to see if getting a Decklink card or something to that effect might help you though for version 6...anyone know?

I just downloaded that pulgin and it works fine by simply hooking camera via firewire then camera-tv by avi cables?
