External monitoring via firewire - Can you still output audio to the soundcard?

I have my DVX hooked up to my mac via firewire. I'm using an external CRT broadcast monitor to grade my video.

I don't want to listen to my audio through my DVX or through an external set of speakers. I want to continue to listen to the audio through the same set of speakers my mac is hooked to. This didn't seem complicated in Vegas. But I can't seem to find an option for it in FCE.

Is there an option to only send the video signal out via firewire and continue to hear the audio signal through your soundcard?

I don't have FCE, but you can do this in Final Cut Pro by going to "Audio/Video Settings" (under "Final Cut Pro" in the menu bar), opening the "A/V Devices" tab, and selecting the audio device you want to use in the "Playback Output - Audio:" pull down menu. You might want to see if there are similar preference in FCE. If not, it may be that FCE doesn't provide these options. If you do use a different playback device that the video output device, you will need to set an appropriate frame offset in the preferences so that the audio is synced with your video. (The different devices likely will have different processing times, throwing the audio and video out of sync without the offset.)

Good luck,
Kevin

Kevin,

I'm used to Vegas. It would be great if FCE had that option, but if it is there I am unable to find it.

Does anyone who is using FCE know if that option exists?

Unfortunately it doesn't matter- you cannot have video to firewire out and audio to your speakers in sync- it's one or the other. That said you can probably hook up your speakers directly to your firewire camera/deck with a $5 cable RCA>mini etc.

Noah,

I consistently do it in Vegas by just using the built in sync offset.

I think I'm going to just move back to vegas. I've been less impressed with FCE every day that I have used it.
