External monitor settings

Just hooked up an external HDMI monitor to my iMac with a Thunderbolt adaptor. The monitor is displaying the same screen as the iMac. How can I set Premiere to display playback full screen on the external monitor while the iMac screen still has the Premiere timeline display?

It sounds like you monitors are set in mirroring mode. You'll have to open up the Mac OS System Preferences and turn mirroring off. Then open up Premiere's Preferences and go to Playback. Enable Mercury Transmit and select your HDMI monitor from the Video Device menu.

Well, I'm getting closer... turned off mirroring and the display now shows the Mac wallpaper. Went into preferences, which now showed Adobe monitors 1 and two (these were not there before). Not sure why because only one is hooked up. Unfortunately selecting either one still doesn't work for playback.

I don't have an iMac but I just hooked my MBP to my Dell monitor and it worked (ThB to Display Port). Make sure the iMac is your main monitor (it should have the Mac menu bar at the top). If the menu bar is not at the top of the iMac monitor go back the Display Preferences on your Mac and there should be a tab called "Arrangement". In the Arrangement tab you'll see both two blue squares that represent the monitors and one square will have a white bar across the top. This represents the Mac menu bar at the top of the screen. Click and drag the bar from one blue square to the other and it should appear at the top of your iMac's screen.

Once that's done, fire up Premiere, go back to the Playback settings, click the check box for Adobe Monitor 2 (Monitor 1 is your iMac, Monitor 2 is the monitor connected via HDMI), hit "okay" and see if that works.

The monitor is now correctly set up as the 2nd monitor, it even gave me the option to calibrate. But when I select monitor 2 in Premiere, still no playback.

Thanks for the help- feel like I'm really close. I literally have not had a second monitor since about 15 years ago when I had a Matrox realtime card that output to a monitor.

Just spent 45 minutes with Adobe support who got preview working on the external monitor remotely. Unfortunately they didn't explain how. I hit something and toggled preview off the monitor. Any idea how to get it back?

Good to hear that you go it working, and thanks for mentioning the setting under the wrench tool (I didn't know that was their either).

Yeah, earlier I had set a keyboard shortcut to "enable transit" and it never worked, except that when Adobe got it working, hitting that key toggled it off and would not turn it back on! Was glad to find the other location of the setting.
