External HDD???

Just looking for some input on external HDD's. I am thinking of buying a straight out 200GB external drive, or buying the kit to turn any HDD into an external drive, throwing my 80GB in it and buying a 160-200GB to throw in my PC. I havent done the math on either option yet, but was looking for input as to what you guys use. I really need to keep the video off of my main drive, i get tired of running diskkeeper everyday. anyway, input or info on your setups is appreciated as my DVX will be here tomorrow and I'm sure I'll be shooting like mad. at least I hope so.

Re: External HDD???

i thought of that also. I have enough bays to do so. I just thought that having an external HDD would allow me to store items without having them on my main PC and have the worries of data loss etc.. the 2nd drive is the cheapest alternative though. thanks for the input.

Re: External HDD???

Was going to get a firewire drive. not sure on the transfer speeds though. I'm still doing some research. thanks for the info so far.

Re: External HDD???

It really depends on your hardware setup...what drives you already have on what bus.

My machine here has a three hard drives and two disk drives, but most PC's only allow for two busses of 1 master and 1 slave, meaning four total drives. The fastest thing you can do is get an SATA controller card and add a drive to it rather then putting another one on your system bussing. This would allow three channels of information transfer, system drive...media drive...and optical burner. If you don't have a need to burn video to disk, then you can easily add a hard disk to your secondary drive bus (opposite from your system hard drive)

I've heard good things about the firewire kits in terms of value versus a standard firewire drive, but if you don't need the portability, you might just want to look into adding an internal media drive.

I do most of my editing on a firewire drive, but I still like to transfer finished files to an internal disk drive before burning to a DVD.

Re: External HDD???

I have a 250gig external firewire drive and I use it for everything from editing/capturing and for music. I haven't had any kind of probelms. It works perfect no drop frames! it also cooks me dinner too. :)

Re: External HDD???

I have a LaCie d2 Hard Drive Triple Interface Extreme 250GB(USB2, firewire 400, firewire800)
but for some reason, it does not work so well with my firewire card.
Sometimes it connects right away, other times it does not recognize it at all.
however, it works perfectly with USB2.

I do not recommend smaller Lacie Porsche HDs.
I have heard so many bad stories about them.

Re: External HDD???

right after writing above,
I tried turned on my Lacie again, and it is not recognized by computer any more, both USB2 and firewire400.....
I am getting pissed off.

yes, I just called Lacie and getting my money back,
It is cheaper to build my own external HD.

I am buying this ( http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-145-336&depa=0 ) plus
Samsung 160GB ( http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-152-014&depa=0 )
total cost 137.50 for a 160GB external HD.

the problem is that I already have 50G data in my Lacie external HD. I need to format it somehow....arggg
