External HDD for Premiere CS5.5?

Hi - just purchased the Asus G74SX-AH71 from Amazon, and will be using it to do some work with Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium bundle. It's got a 500GB internal hard drive and I got a 64GB SSD for the OS - but looking at options for an external scratch drive. No esata or firewire present on the laptop, but there is a USB 3.0 slot. Is that going to be good enough to use for a scratch disk?

Thinking about possibly picking up a 1TB USB 3.0 drive - does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

USB 3.0 should give you acceptable speeds for editing. But you'd be better off putting the Scratch on the internal 500 (along with Projects) and using the external strictly for Media.

Hmm - I guess I'm a little confused as to what the difference is between scratch and media. I've got some experience editing on Avid Media Composer where the media and render files are all saved in the same place. Could you clarify a bit for me?

Scratch files in Premiere Pro are the video and audio renders, the .pek and (for MPEG source) .index files, and the Media Cache files. (At least, that's what I mean by 'scratch' files.)

You certainly can put them in the Media drive, but I find it better to spread things out a bit. Keeping the Scratch and Media on different drives can help increase performance.

Okay, so I can set the scratch drive to be the internal 500GB drive, and use a USB 3.0 external drive to store the actual raw footage I import into Premiere?
