External HD issue.

I have a 160 gig external I us to store stuff, and sometimes to move data from one mac to the other. It was working fine until I tried to move it from the G4 to the G5. The G4 did not recognize it. I thought that was weird, but when I hooked it back up to the G5, it did not recognize it either. I tried a different cable, and still nothing.

The drive normally goes through a hub, which also connects to my audio interface (a Firebox). The light to show the Firebox is in synch with the Mac is supposed to be blue (red if it is out of synch). It flashes between the colors when the HD is plugged in, but is fine when it isn't. I disconnected the hub and plugged the HD directly to the mac and still nothing. I repaired permissions and I can hear the HD start up and spin when I turn it on.

Any help? I have about 100 gigs of files on there that I need.

Thanks in advance.

I just went through this a few days ago. I purchased Disk Warrior ($99) which cleared it up for me. Oh also, I bought a new HD case just incase to rule that out.

you may want to remove teh drive from teh enclosure and connect it internally if you have the option or try another enclosure. If the drive is spinning up, it is likely that it is the enclosure.

You could also try putting another known working drive in the enclosure and see if it recognizes. I would bypass the hub and plug it directly to the machine to rule that out aswell.

Thanks,

I have bypassed the hub and that didn't help. I will try a new enclsue, although most of the ones that I find are USB, and I prefer firewire. Is it relatively simple to move the drive from one enclosure to another?

Thanks again

So the Disk Warrior fixed your problem? I guess I'm going to get it next time I have that problem.

Yeah, it worked out well! :) I bought it from their site for $99, downloaded it on the spot + they send a cd in the mail. Not too bad of a deal if you ask me.

Anyway, I'm just happy that it's all recovered, thank god. lol

Thanks for your help Blaine.
