External HD for older iMac

I'm running FCP on an older iMac, the first one that came with intel processors, and for at least a year, I've been capturing everything and rendering all files to the mac HD. I know, not a great idea, but it hasn't caused me any problems until now that it's almost full and I need to get an external drive to start working off of. I always read people saying you want eSATA, but since this machine doesn't have that, what would be the preferred connection? All I've got really is USB and firewire 400, will there be a significant difference between either of those? The max speed for my firewire bus is 400 mbps, which seems adequate for editing in prores, but it's not saying anything about USB.

Ok, I picked one up today and this has become much more of an FCP question. I moved ALL of my FCP documents over to it but whenever I go to set the scratch disks as that drive, it makes new folders. Is there any way to make the capture scratch and render files go directly into pre-existing folders?

Yes, unfortunately that's what I've got for now. But hey, at least I'm getting to use this camera for free since it's from my school (even though I already graduated a week ago). Hopefully I'll be getting an HMC150 sometime within the next year or so.
