I have a Western Digital external Hard drive that I have been using for a few years now to store archived projects, my iTunes library, pics and graphics. Well I don't know if it's on its last leg or what but while I am editing or have FCP open the external HD goes from being totally quiet to what sounds like someone starting a car that won't turn over. It eventually will catch and start spinning again.
It's like the HD is asleep but it keeps waking itself up on its own.
The weird thing is that I am not using this HD as the scratch disc! Like I said its only for finished work, my music and photos.
So if the HD is "asleep" that in turn causes FCP to lock up and I get the beach ball spinning effect. I have to FORCE QUIT FCP everytime because the thing won't wake itself up!
For now I am going to have to remember to unhook it from the computer while I edit in FCP. I don't notice this with any of the other software I use.
It's frustrating when your right in the middle of an edit or a render and FCP locks up and its because of the external HD.
Anyone seen or heard of anything like this before?
