having problems with my external hardrive.

when I go to capture, I get homo spinning rainbow and it says allocating memory.

eventualy It will come up, and it will capture. But I can't seem to mark anything. If I stop the capture it Allocates memory again for 30 minutes.

The hardrive is a USB / Firewire 250gb MY BOOK by western digital. $250 hardrive. Should work like a gem right.

Could it be settings? I'm using firewire, should I use USB?

HELP?

has it always done this? did you change something recently? how much RAM do you have? how much free drive space? what computer? which FCP? do you have the external set as the scratch disk?
the more you give, the more you get
maybe you shouldn't call aspects of your computer 'homo', computers have feelings too.
not that there is anything wrong with that...

Are you capturing from a deck/camera and going straight to your external harddrive? If you are, I'd try resetting your scratch disks to your internal drive, make sure you have adequate space and capture there; then move the footage afterwards to your external drive.

thanks geoff

That is the simple solution, and the most effecient.

and to the previous post.

I have a imac G5 - 512 ram - final cut pro HD academic version- and about 60gb free drive space.

I did have the external drive set as the scratch disk.

and sorry to offend with the homo rainbow comment.

thanks for the help..
