External Hard Drives!

Hey all!

I was just wondering what everyone's opinions are about external hard drives before i went out and bought one. I was thinking about maybe a LaCie 250 or something like it.

Thanks, Jack

We've been using Lacie 250Gb's drives. The ones that look like gaint Lego Bricks. Up to now, they worked fine. They're easy to stack, but I am a bit worried about heat: the closed plastic cover makes it difficult for heat to dissipate. And putting one on top of the other makes it worse. Stacking is nice for storage, but not while operating.

Lacie is a good brand. I would recommend it. We also started using 3 seagate 400GB HDD's for about 4 months now and they are pretty solid!

I tend to buy what's on sale at Fry's. My one piece of advice is to stay away from Maxtor. I've had 3 Maxtors freeze up on me with super important files. They were not old or overused. I also have 2 friends that had a Maxtor die and in telling tales of my woes met 2 people that also had them die.

Stay away.

Seagate SATAs are my current trend. I also tend not to buy larger than 300G as I dont want too many eggs on one basket when the thing fries.

BTW, my Seagate 300G (IDE) is in an external firewire enclosure and it keeps up just fine when viewing, editing, previewing and most anything else. It only slows down when previewing clips/scenes with heavy FX applied. (Although I'm sure that's mostly a app processing thing as opposed to read speed.

Yeah, I've heard things about Seagate and Maxtor. KOVAROVA, can you tell me more about the LaCie drives going down on you?

Yeah, Kovarova, I'd be interested in that as well... as my project, Smuggler's Ransom, is on ONE 250 GB Lacie drive...

Seagate = NO GOOD, especially for video. I've got a 300GB, and it falls asleep on me all the time, and there's no way to change the settings for that. It's failed on me once in 1.5 years. I have a Maxtor 200GB that's failed several times in 4 years.

My IBM drive in a custom FW enclosure has been my best drive.

they start making noise.. a grinding sound and begin to crap out and just stop working. + they get really hot. you cant swap out the drives inside if you have to. you should really consider the link i posted above. it is great to be able to ad a new drive ( of your choice) as you need to. + you can backup and save your projects on their own drives. you are not limited as you would be with Lacie. if the Lacie starts making noise and the blue light begins flickering on the front then back your s*it up somewhere else right away.

I have the Lacie "Porsche designed" one and it doesn't get very hot at all... I will keep my ears open for the grinding sound though.
