External Hard Drives???

Are extenal hard disk drives (USB 2.0) any good for video capturing & editing? Because I have been getting alot of glitches lately!!! Thanx

Really, what kind are you using? Is it firewire or usb? I have a Western Digital, 160GB, USB 2.0!! and that is the one I am having problems with!

I use a Seagate barrracuda 80gig external..no problems using firewire and usb2.0

Maybe you can run a diagnostic by going to the drive and right click to open properties and run error checking program to see if you have any bad cells.

I use a LaCie 500 gb, firewire only for storage now. I tried to use it for capture but if I try to capture a really long clip, the clip starts to "stutter" during the capture process. It's just the firewire resources conflicting. It's not a problem though as I only got it for storage anyway.

I also have WD 160gb external, it's both Firewire and Usb 2.0, it's connected via the usb port and I haven't had a single issue with it in over a year and I use it almost everyday. I use it to capture, playback, to load my audio samples, and to transfer between computers. I'm about to get a new 300gb one.

I use a lacie 80gb for mobile capture with laptop and a maxtor 300gb 16mb cache

and then a gembird ide shell for storage of old footage. (just switch IDE drives)

I have a laptop and use USB 2.0 external drives with very little problems. I have captured up to 60 mintues of footage with no dropped frames. However, when I print-to-tape I might transfer the Final AVI to the internal hard drive and PTP from there because when I play a 24p AVI from the timeline (without any FX) on the external drive, it plays at 23.~ The ~ means what should be a solid .97 ends up jumping around at times and I have no idea why.

make sure you go into the device manager on your PC and right click on the listing for the external drive, there is a setting for preformance, or speed. make sure you enable for speed (not sure the exact wording right now)
