External Hard Drive Traffic Jam

I'm really not a techie though I play one on TV. So my question is:

Can anyone recommend a solution? Having a traffic jam trying to edit on an IMac dual core with a MyBook external hard drive connected by a USB 2. Crashing, slow performance trying to edit HD footage. Do I need a separate card? I suspect the problem is that everythng is on the same bus? If so, can anyone recommend a card or tell me what to look for in buying a card?

What kind of video are you editing? I'd try FW drives first though. USB2 is rated on bursts, not sustain that FW is and what editing needs.

But answer the first question first.

The MyBook enclosures sometimes have both. Firewire would be best for this kind of work, yes.

Having too many things on the same bus can cause problems, but you'd have to tell us everything you have hooked up to it before we decide that. It probably isn't the problem. Usually isn't.

Thanks for the quick responses! -- I'm not the one editing, but my friend is trying to edit HD footage from two low end Sonys. Using iMovie. So you think firewire might be worth trying?

I would go with FW 800 or get a RAID set up for HD video. HD eats up a lot of hard drive space so you want to have more than enough at least that is what some of my friends say that are shooting and editing in HD.
