External hard drive(s) for FCP

I need an external hard drive to edit a project. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions of ones that you've had experience with bad or good. I need at least 250 gigs. The lacie mini companion hard drive seems to be one of the best reviewed ones on the apple site.

I have a LaCie Porsche drive, 250 GB. I think it's great. A little noisy, but for the price (sub $100), you really can't beat it.

I've been using my LaCie d2 250GB for about two years and am highly satisfied with it so that I just bought another one, but 300GB. It gives you maximum 58MBps whereas LaCie mini companion goes up to 40MBps. Also, LaCie d2 series has not only Firewire400, but also Firewire800, USB 2.0, as well as USB 1.1. I daisy chain my two drives, and it should be fater when chained in Firewire 800 environment.
One of my friends just experienced with his drive (d2 250gb) failing to boot, and starting to cry out loud, literally. It's been working really good for me, but him. That's what I want to say. I think every storage device has possibility of breaking anyway. Wise people usually have more than one drive only for the safety, and I just joined with them after seeing what happened to my friend.
Check out ZipZoomFly.com, and you should be able to find d2 300gb for about 215 or so, which is a real good deal. I hope it's okay to mention a specific seller here. I apologize if it's not okay.

I've got 3 Wiebtechs that I've bought over the last 3 years, and have been very happy with them.

Lacie has a bad track record with power supplies failing on their firewire drives over the past couple years. They may have corrected the problem, but I haven't heard for sure. To echo Joe Kras - Weibetech makes a pretty good drive case for $80 that you can add whatever size drive you want - they also sell pre-installed drives. Other World Computing (macsales.com) also has some well-made cases and drives.
I would highly recommend getting 2 drives, and backing up everything on the second drive.

how small is that mini? I might need something like that when I get my lap top later on this summer...
I haven't seen it in my eyes, but it's made so that it could fit right onto the bottom of MacMini.

Yea, it fits on top of the mini mac, and then comes in 80, 160 or 250

Lacie put cheap harddrives in there cases. They just look good on the outside!!! At work, we had to send back 2 terabites to Lacie because they were always failing. And they send back 8/ 250drives and in the last 6months, we had problemes mounting 3 of them. And my personnal Lacie drive died on me 3 weeks ago!! So me and lacie are not going work together ever!!!!!

Voila!

I love my Lacie

Big Disk 500 gig.......I have a mac so I did not have any driver problems:beer:

anyone have any insight with Weibetech and its RT5 setup? I need an external RAID5 setup, and am curious because it seems this is one of the only i've seen around.
thanks.

My Lacie 500 has run smooth for me for a long time, and also travels with me, no problems.

Good drives, some of the best, Other World Computing.
