I'm having a problem with a Verbatim 500G hardrive. I'm trying to transfer an 11g AVI file from another external Hard drive. I have 431G of space left on it and it is telling me the file is 2 large for destination. I dont know why this is. It will allow me to transfer other smaller files...but why the heck cant i transfer this 11G file with 432G of space left?? Do some external drives have a limit to what u can transfer in one sitting?

KKeller is on target, but more explanation is needed.

If your target drive is formatted with the FAT32 file system, then it won't allow files to be more than 4 GB in size. Odds are your source drive is formatted with the NTFS file system (which does allow larger file sizes), but your target drive is formatted with FAT32. This is probably the reason you're getting the message that the file is too large for the destination drive.

Here's an article that will help explain the differences between FAT32 and NTFS:

I am using at WD 1 TB external HD to store some files.
The WD 1 TB external HD is formatted to FAT 32.
The WD 1 TB external HD will not accept my QT video files?
Is this a result of the formatting?
Thanks

GO BLUE!

If the 1 TB drive is formatted for FAT32, then it will not accept any file that is larger than 4 GB in size. So if your QT files are larger than 4 GB, then yes, this would be the problem.

Re-format the drive with the NTFS file system, and this will no longer be a problem. WARNING: Re-formatting the drive will cause ALL DATA currently on the drive to be LOST. So make sure to backup all of that data FIRST.

Good luck!

The QT file is 12G, but I have been able to store larger HD files than 4G on the WD HD.
It is only when I try to save QT files that I experience and error message,
I am using a Mac, if that makes a difference?

It might. I have no knowledge of Macs. If the drive is formatted FAT32, then I assume you're running some Windows emulator? Better ask a Mac expert. Sorry.

Just curious.....what is the error msg you receive??

The error message I receive is that the QT file cannot be transferred to the HD device?
It usually happens about 2/3 through the process?
I have several QT videos files that I can't back up on the WD HD.
