External Hard Drive Index (Mac)

So I'm not sure if there is something like this, but here goes...

I have a few external hard drives full of video & graphic files that I use with my Mac Book Pro. (With hard drives being as cheap as they are I hardly ever delete any video clips).

Does anyone know of a way to index each of these drives, so I can search for a file w/o having the drive plugged in? Once I find which drive the file is on I can plug in that drive instead of plugging them all in and doing a search.

I know Spotlight in OSX does some indexing, but I don't think it does exactly what I'm wanting.

Thanks.

I don't personally but here's another approach to consider.

You could run a program that scans a given drive (plugged in) while filtering for video files and list all of them including paths into a text file.
Once you do that for each individual drive, combine all of the text into one text file (and list which drive is which).

Then to do a search, just open the text in a text editor and select 'Find' and it will tell you on what drive it is and in what folder.
You'll still have to physically plug the drive in to get the file though.

Any Mac programmer could write one up for you easily. I run a PC otherwise I'd offer.
Just a thought.
