External Firewire HDD

This may sound stupid but I have a question.

If you export (render from timeline) footage to an external Firewire HDD, will it take the same amount of time as if you were exporting to internal HDD?
I am not very familiar with the speed of data transfer internal or external, but I suppose it could take extra time because of limitations of Firewire connection?!

Also, what about speeds for editing? Say if you hold your captured clips on an external Firewire HDD and you start editing? Will it be noticeable slower then having your clips on internal HDD?

And the last one...capturing???
Mini DV Deck via Firewire to PC via Firewire to External HDD.
Is this working?

Thanks!

It depends on what type of internal drive you have, Ultra ATA, SATA, etc...then it also depends on what type of computer you have. You can capture in the way your describe with no problems. The rest depends on your comp and what kind of hard drive it has.

Yes that works. You need 2 firewire ports. You can even use an external USB hard drive.

Thanx for replies!
I think I have SATA internal drives.
The rest is Win XP, P4 2.4GHz, 1 GB DDR.
I have 2 firewire ports.

It also depends on your external drives connections and disk speed.
