I wasnt sure if this was the best place to post or not but here goes.

Does anyone have any comments on external DVD recorders. I donot have a DVD recorder with my machine but I woudl like to burn some DVD. My local comp store has a few models all for under under 150 but im not sure if there is anyting i shoudl be looking for. The ones i see are also USB.

I am running and older machine, its a dell P4, 160ghz, 512mb ram, with XP as my OS. I have enough problems just producing the video on this machine so i do not want to spend the money on the DVD unless its going to work. Any help would be appreciated.

You can use a regular DVD recorder and get the same results. I say regular as in the ones you would have hooked up in your home theater set up or to your main TV of choice. I know the one I have it has 3 lines of input. I can run my DVX straight to the recorder and record what the camera is seeing live. Or use as a VCR and play back tape from the camera and record onto the DVD later. Not sure if this is what you were asking or not.

How would that work with the DVD menu? WHat I mean is, what happens when you record a DVD that way and you put it in the machine? Does it just start to play?

I mean after i ahve produced the project in my editor I want to put it back out to DVD. So this is after the DVX has beenused to capture the orginal footage. I want to make the menu and so forth. Also my original post sd i had a 160 mhz machine that should be 1.60 mhz

smithgall,
You might want to check those externals and see if they are USB 1 or USB 2.0. My machine sounds a lot like yours (1.4gig) and I have Usb 1 (or 1.1...whatever it's called) I am trying to find one that has a firewire interface, because all the USB ones that I have seen are 2.0.

Good point. They are actually 2.0. i have 1.0 as my original usb but when i added my firewire card i bought one that had two firewire and two 2.0 usb. So that is probably covered.

I've got a Sony DVdirect VC-10 that does what you're talking about. The new VC-20 would be better.
