External Capture Card

Hi, i'm a new user here, but I just recently purchased a DVX100a. I need to purchase a capture card so I can start editing... but i have a laptop. I've read up a bit but all the recommended ones (matrox, pinnacle, etc) are internal for desktops.

Does anyone know of a good external capture card, or one that will fit in the cardbus laptop slot? My budget is <$750, let's say.

My specs are as follows:
WinXP
3ghz pentium 4
1 gig ram
external harddrive 200gigs
usb 2.0 and firewire ports
and i have vegas 5, though i might get adobe premiere pro

Re: External Capture Card

when i plug in my camera via firewire, vegas doesn't recognize it at as a capture device... do i not need anything more than a working firewire connection though? I thought perhaps it didn't work because i didn't have the right hardware.

maybe i just need to find a way to make my computer recognize the dvx when i plug it in? because it definitely isn't right now...

Re: External Capture Card

Make sure you have any drivers for the firewire installed and enabled.
Check properties the hardware.
Check Vegas to make sure you've selected firewire and it's the right type (i.e. NTSC DV) Check Vegas manuals.

Re: External Capture Card

thanks for the help, but sorry i'm kind of slow: how can i check if i have updated and working firewire drivers? or where can i find them?

Re: External Capture Card

First thing to do is make sure you set Vegas to use DV firewire. Try to get it setup so it should see the card. I don't use Vegas and don't use PC's so someone else can detail the steps but it should be covered in the manual that came with the software.

it's not likely to be a problem with the drivers but to be sure:
Did the firewire come with the computer? Go to their web site and check under support > downloads and see what they have available. Is there anything matching firewire, your operating system and is newer than your computer? If so download and install.

You can also check hardware under Control Panels or something similar on the PC. There should a way to display properties or whatever they call them and see the firewire card info. (Version, model, etc)
