Exterior night pool -- lighting help

Richard,

Actually the only 3200K is 1K Arri suspended on the wall to the left of the pic. This was justified by the large fire pit in the middle of the scene. The lights in the foreground are source 4's with dicroic filters, and remember these are bouncing out of a pool. In addition to the Arri mentioned in the earlier post there are two Kino Flos offering fill from the other side. If anyone is interested I will illustrate with a diagram.

If you wanted to grab more of the water reflection on the subject and didn't have a lot of light... Probably not at all that possible but slabs of mirror at the bottom of the pool will do wonders. Slabs of mirrors at the bottom of any pool of water will do wonders in fact. :B Try it.

Kholi,

That is a great idea. The water was soooo cold we used a trash can at one end of the pool to generate small waves.

It's interesting that you say this because the color temperatures are the exact opposite of what I originally intended for the scene. Lucky mistake I guess.

By the way, do Cool Lights operate at a high enough frequency to use under water? I know Kinos can do this.

The ballasts are driven at 40,000 hz so yes, very high frequency. However, there is 110v going directly in to the ballast from the wall plug and that is not shielded from water so you have those that if they got wet could conduct 110vAC into the water (IMHO). You need the ballast in a waterproof container with long socket cables coming out of it.

I know some people use Kinos in water but its a pretty controversial subject and even Kino doesn't directly sanction it for obvious reasons of liability. To do it right, you would need a waterproof ballast box with the 110v going into that and some long cables coming out going to (hopefully) aquarium grade waterproof 2G11 caps. Even better would be to leave the ballast box completely out of water (even if it is waterproof) and just run the tubes under there with some longer than normal cables to the sockets. Thats the best and safest way to operate flos in water IMHO.

I am doing another pool scene tonight. I plan on using the Gyoury System with the 75 foot head cabled to get the flos under water and keep the ballast out. I will keep you posted.
