Extending the cable to H4n

I just got this cable on BH (http://www.sam-mallery.com/archives/892) and now I have a quick question. I don't see why this wouldn't work but I am curious if I can run an extension of this cable. I am currently using the Zoom as a boom (yes, I know that is not ideal but it is budget right now) so that is hanging over the subject's head... so I can't mount the zoom to the shoe mount on top of my t2i... so i am wanting to put an extension between the zoom and camera. Should I put the cable in the zoom or the cable or does it matter?

its an unbalanced cable so i wouldn't feel comfortable running it long distances. but radio shack has 1/8" extension cables that might work. but if you want to talk "ideally" you'd have a real shotgun mic at the end of a boom pole using xlr's ran to a mixer that fed your recorder. ;)

Ok, stupid question, but why? You're using a recorder as a mic and a camera as a recorder. The t2i has an internal mic, last I checked, which is plenty good enough to record a guide track to sync the sound from the recorder to later.

You can try it out with an inexpensive stereo 3.5mm female to stereo 3.5mm male cable. But, don't do it with a cable longer than 10 feet.

Hi Jared,

My engineer recommends www.Markertek.com for an extension cable, female to male 3.5mm(1/8”), but the maximum length you could go would be 3-6 feet.

The part number for this cable is MPS-MFS-3. If you need something longer, you could go with the six foot: MPS-MFS-6.

Best,

Franz

i can do the sync, its not a problem, but i am trying to speed up the editing process... we do interviews every single thursday that have to be posted on the website by friday morning so anything that speeds that up is nice...
