Extend DVX audio pots

The pots on the DVX are good in that you can adjust them and not worry about it
being accidentally moved because they are set in to the camera body. But some-
times at a gig you need to ride those things due to audience noise, the occasional
loud laughing, clapping, coughing fits etc. The way the pots are now makes it hard
to do this easily. I wished the dials "popped" out so you could leave it out and turn
them and then push them in to lock into place. (like some of the dials on the XL1)

I was wondering if anyone's come up with a creative way to extend the pots out
of the body so you could turn them easier. I was thinking of finding something a
little smaller in diameter (like an eraser head) and glueing it on. Maybe something
not permanent like velcro might work better.

Anyone else find the need to do this and want to share their fixes?

The reason is the manual level controls were really designed to set levels with some external mixer and than not be touched. On shoulder mount cameras there is usually a door and they are placed right next to cameraman's head making them impossible to access during shooting.

If you are running a one man crew with camera mounted shotgun or or a lav you could pick up the SD MP1 and attach to your belt.

Good luck

I remember that Jarred had a nice workaround this, but I really can't remember where to dig it up...

Yes. I am learning everyday that I need to get a better setup for audio and/or hire someone to do the audio. But for now, my situation is more run-n-gun (but starting to find more film production type work) one man operation. Checking out the MP1 and have a question. Is it better to connect LINE-IN to the DVX instead of MIC-IN? Meaning - is it redundant to go through the MP1 then to the DVX Line-In? What do I gain in sound quality (besides the being able to adjust the levels easier)? Are the MP1's mic pre better than the DVX's? Do I get a cleaner sound?

Thanks

I have not personally used that model but I am 99% certain that it uses the same mic pre that are used in other Sound Device mixers. You will get cleaner audio sending it line level but mic pres on the DVX are impressive enough that the difference is not as dramatic as with most other DV cameras.

If you can afford it, the SD Mixpre is bulkier but doubles the channels you can monitor and is useful if and when you are using a boom man.
