ext hd advice

But do you have USB 3.0 on your computer? The drive speed itself is not necessarily the issue - the slow-poke speed of the USB 2.0 interface is an issue, not meant for video editing. At a minimum (a few years back), you'd want FW400 or FW800, or eSATA was better yet. Now we have USB 3.0, and Macs and some PCs now have Thunderbolt, which is by far the fastest. Depending on the type of footage being edited, you may get better performance using an external RAID unit rather than a single drive. A RAID will have two or more drives ganged together in one box, basically doubling the speed and capacity. A 2-drive RAID is typically fast enough for most editing needs with any compressed video format. Assuming a fast interface of course, not USB 2.0

The Seagate drive specs do not show what hard drive specs are inside the box - you want 7200rpm, 64mb cache performance for video editing. Avoid "green" drives as they favor energy savings over performance.

well thanks for the advice, I do indeed Have USB3 ports on my pc. Would Love to upgrade to a Thunderbolt motherboard but I dont have enough cash atm to buy one. Ive done ton of research past week bout Speeds between usb2 - usb3, firewire 400-800 ect thunderbolt. Ill probably get some kind of raid setup by end of year. thing is ive been using USB2 card reader with USB2 Ext. 2Tb 5900 Rpm Drive from Fantom for past 4-5 years and Im transferring LARGE files from HD and 4k camera from my gh4. So in reality I should see a noticeable difference between the Speeds of the USB2 Card reader and the USB3 card reader , specially if i get a usb3 EXT hd.
