ext. Encasement for old HDD

With all these external harddrives coming out.
I heard from a friend that you can use an old internal harddrive and put it in an encasement with (firewire, fan, power). And it will still work just as good as the external harddrives they sell in the market. (depending on internal HDD speed)

So, anyone ever tried it?

Should be fine depending on speed. Make sure to get a case that matches the connector type(s) for data and power and the size of the drive.
