exposure

i just read the thread about correcting underexposed shots... sorry i cant help on that, but it got me wondering:

is it generally good to underexpose by one stop in order to make sure. or should you aim at the correct exposure when filming at the first? but if you do that you could risk tiny overexposures as well... and thats worse to repair...
how do you guys and gals handle exposure when filming, especially when filming unplanned footage?

thanks for comments on this.
