Exporting?

Hi there people! I'm new at FCP, and I just finished editing a wedding-movie. Now the only problem is; that I can't seem to find a way to export the movie into a not-so-giant size. I tried a couple of times, also with compressor. But it ended up with 20 GB!! The movie is about 2 hours long. I also tried the "DVD 16:9 150 minutes....." but then I didnt manage to import them into DVD STUDIO PRO.

Can anyone help me?

There's no way Compressor should be spitting out a 20GB file. Are you sure you're looking at the MPEG-2 file that says 20GB? It sounds like you might be looking at a Quicktime Movie (which 20GB is certainly within reason for a long project).

With your timeline selected/active, if you go File > Export > Using Compressor, then in Compressor use the DVD preset for 150mins, best quality, you should be good to go. Make sure you set the destination to somewhere obvious so you know where exactly it is going to go (perhaps even just toss it to the desktop). The file you get, and the file you import into DVD Studio Pro should say .m2v at the end (for the video at least). If it doesn't, you're not dealing with a MPEG-2 for DVD authoring then.

Is there anything else you're trying/doing that you didn't mention before. The more detailed you can be about the steps your taking the easier it can potentially be to trouble shoot it.

cheers.

Yeah - the 20 gb file was a QT.
I'm trying the way you said, but now I'll get 1 videofile and 2 audiofiles, right? How do I combine them in DVD Studio Pro?

Ah okay, you used the preset "All". You don't need the AIFF file. Just stick with the AC3 Dolby audio file. Its way smaller and the quality will be the same. If you've already hit submit, just delete it after its all done.

In DVD Studio Pro, import both the .m2v file and the .ac3 (dolby audio) file. Then at the same time, just drag and drop both of them over to the track in the graphical window (a little green square). This will place both synced together onto your track for you. Then you just need to deal with the menu and such associations.

cheers.

Ok, now I've got the files and everything in DVD studio, I've divided it into chapters as well. But how do I make a scene selection menu? I made one by dragging, it into the menu and choosin "SET CHAPTER...", but I had not marked all the chapters, so there were only 5 chapters. Now I've got 20 chapters. I deleted the sub-menus for the chapter selection, 'cause it was only the 5 first ones. How do I make another with all of the chapters?

Thanks for the help man! Really appreciate it!

If you're in a pinch right now, I'd suggest just using iDVD and reading up a bit on studio pro. I use idvd for weddings cause it's so easy (just drag and drop), and Studio Pro for my higher end projects.

Are you making your own menu pages (backgrounds and such) or are you using one of the templates? If you're using one of the templates, just make new menus and keep applying the "index" one of the templates. Then just configure the back, next, main buttons and all the like. Not too complicated really, just would take a bit of time.

How to do all the linking is a bit long of an explanation though. Kind of hard to do that here. I would google around for such on DVDSP if you're unsure. Otherwise, run out to a bookstore and look for the Apple Pro Training Series: DVD Studio Pro 4 book.

cheers.

Thanks! I found a way to to it, took some time though - so I'll probably use iDvd the next time!

Now, my last dilemma; the rendered file ends up round 4,5 GB. The video, audio and menus make a total of app. 5,1 GB. Is there something I can do to make the videofile smaller? I need it to fit a normal 4,7 GB DVD. I tried looking for a place to change the bitrate, but didn't find any.

I really appreciate the help, guys!

Same here. Just use Idvd. It will turn that 20GB file into about a dvd disk (easy as pie)

i find Idvd a bit confusing. (only looked at it twice)

Thanks,
Nathaniel

But then I'll have to start all over again with the the chapters... Place new markers and so on... Thats why I want to finish it in DVD studio.

Modify Compressor settings to change the bitrate (lower). How long is your footage? It's going to be tough to put more than 2 hours on a single-side DVD at a decent quallity. (but I guess it depends how you define decent.)

As Bob said, if you're that close to 2 hours (you essentially are 2 hours straight up), then it could be tough to get it onto a 4.7GB DVD cleanly. But what you can do, also, like he said is adjust the bit-rate just a bit.

If you take your 20GB (raw) movie file into Compressor. Then use the 120 minute preset option for it (just MPEG-2 and Dolby, ignore AIFF). Click on the MPEG-2 output listing in there. This will then bring up the MPEG-2 options in the Inspector window. It should default the Encoder button (there's a series of 5 or 6 square buttons, one of them is for encoder options). On the encoder settings, there is a Quality tab. Click on that. Then reduce the bitrate from 5.0 (I think that's the 2 hour setting) to say 4.5 maybe. I'd also perhaps reduce the max bit-rate down to say 6.5 (I think default is like 7 or 7.5 or something). Then encode your film. It should now have enough space for the video and the audio.

The more complex you're making your menu though, the more space you might need. So if you're doing a big complex menu, then to play on the safe side, make take the bit-rate down to 4 instead. Again, it depends where you want to spend disc space on, the movie itself or the menu. Good luck.

cheers.

Another problem...

Another problem...

New problem.

I've made a DVD and shown it to the bride . And she wanted some changes - so I made it the way she wanted. Now when i render the m2v file with compressor and import into DVD Studio the video does not display. Its black all the way in both "viewer" and when using the "simulate"...

What have I done wrong? It went fine the first time, and I've only changed the bitrate/constant bitrate in compressor.

By the way, please don't suggest me using iDVD again. Im gonna do that the next time!

When you said you rendered the m2v file, you didn't mean you rendered the m2v file did you? Please explain what you edited and what file format you compressed because if you edited the m2v file then there's a problem right there.

Sorry, my bad.
I edited in FCP and exported as m2v using compressor. Just like I did the first time. Only now the video is black in DVD Studio.

I made it, at last. :)
Only now the video will not show on the motion-button. But I'm so sick and tired of working with this weddigmovie now, so i dont bother to fix it. To complete my dvd I only need some stills from the FCP project and Im done. So I'll ask one final question and then I'll stop bothering you guys:
How do I grab frames in FCP? I want to save them as jpeg.

Thanks for the help!!

set an IN><OUT on the frame you want, select EXPORT from the file menu, choose QUICKTIME CONVERSION, then change format to STILL IMAGE.
