Okay I just finished cropping every shot to 2.35.1. How do i go about exporting so that it will play the true size on widescreen tvs. is this just how i leave it? also if i were to export uncropped footage as a 24p widescreen, will that automatically crop my footage to playback fully on a widescreen tv?

thanks!

It's important that you state what format you originated in. Did you shoot 4:3 or 16:9? It's simple if you are exporting from a 16:9 time line. If this is the case, All I need to do is simply export it as 16:9, convert for DVD and it resizes itself when displayed on either 4:3 or 16:9 tv.

If you are working in a 4:3 timeline, you need to do work.

- Import the 4:3 video into a 16:9 timeline, it should squeeze, Un squeeze it and add the crop. I used to do this in Avid when I had an XL1s. Export as 16:9. You should be able to do similar in AE and other programs. This is waht I did and it worked for me, it would display properly on both 16:9 and 4:3 tv's.

Use the basic principle I explained above and make it happen.

"Crop", yes. But in this case that doesn't mean cutting to 2.35:1, it means putting in black bars at 2.35:1 on 16:9 footage.

DVD players/televisions don't do 2.35:1; they do 16:9, so you have to put in the bars yourself.

And then you have to get the black right, so it's seemless between what you generate and what the player/tv creates. There are a number of posts on the subject in here and/or the NLE forums. I can never remember what the black color is.

i put black bars on 4:3 footage to make it look like 2.35.1 in a regular 24P timeline. from here what should i do without having to recrop every shot?

P.S. I'm using sony Vegas 7.0

It doesn't actually matter what you started with; as long as everything looks correct in a widescreen timeline, you can export for Widescreen DVD and Vegas will take care of everything for you.

So, in this case, you don't want to add a simple mask of black bars; you do need to crop everything to 2.35:1 in order for it to come out correctly.

Remember, though, that DVDs are always 720x480, so exporting a Widescreen image for correct display on a widescreen TV will mean that Vegas will include black bars on the top and bottom. There's no way not to do this; the image MUST be 16:9, and 2.35:1 is wider than 16:9. So, the black bars will be part of the image.

GenJerDan is referring to the black of the bars. If you just crop and render, the bars in the image will be darker than they should be and while it will look OK on a widescreen TV, it won't look right on a standard TV (you'll see black bands between the image and what look like grey bars above and below the black bands. Easiest way around this is to take a black card out of the Media Generator, go into its properties, and change all of the RGB settings to 16 (not the Alpha, though). Then, run the card along the bottom track for the entire length of your project.
