Sounds like audio clipping. During playback, do you see the audio meters peaking near the max? Even if you don't, you can still have some instantaneous spikes that don't show up on the meters. Try reducing the overall volume with the master on the audio mixer. There a limiter on the 'dynamics' audio effect that could also help.
