Exporting to Avid from FCP

Hey all,

We're trying out a new tapeless workflow to get our two shows ready for broadcast. We currently edit in FCP in ProRes 422, export a ProRes from there, use Compressor to encode that as Avid DNxHD and drop it off at the local closed-captioning studio. They work completely in Avid 3.x on Windows XP. That's worked okay so far, but our closed-captioning guy charges us for the time it takes to import that DNxHD. That's been adding up.

He's suggested we give him an .m2t file -- which Compressor can make just fine. He says it can be brought into Avid without a problem. Only problem is, Avid chokes on that file, saying it's unable to read the MPEG file.

Has anyone here had experience exporting to Avid from Final Cut Pro? Or maybe can share a Compressor droplet that has the right .m2t settings? Maybe I ought to ask in the Avid forum.

Thanks!
Max

Compressor won't make M2ts you can use. It would need to be a format such as ProRes or DNxHD.

Thanks Noah!

His version of Avid can't read ProRes (and he's not about to upgrade) and DNxHD is working for us, only taking way too long to import on his end. We get charged for that time. Plus, there's something up with our color being crushed when going from ProRes to DNxHD.

Looking for an alternative to those two.

Sounds like you need to find another closed-captioning guy then.

ProRes and DNcHD are industry standards.

There are probably variety of different avid codecs that he can use. Find out which specific codec (meridian compressed 35:1, etc) he wants aside from m2t, and what resolution, etc. You'll be able to encode that and it should do a "fast import" into avid very quickly.

But again... yeah your CC is way out of date.
