exporting to a file to a windows codec

this probably is the wrong thread, but sorry i'll get more answers here.

So who can help me with this problem and bare with me I may sound confusing because I'm not fully understanding some stuff.

So I have a mac and I have an HDV 1080i file that I want to export for someone using a windows XP. I always mess up with the wrong codec and the file never works on the windows. Anyone tell me what codec I need to export to, to make the file work on a Windows XP

EDIT: I'm using FCP or iMovie

tell the person using windows XP to use VLC, it will play just about anything you can throw at it.

If you export an h.264 quicktime file, and then make sure that the windows user downloads the latest version of the free quicktime player, you should have no problems...
