exporting/rendering only text, no background?

I had posted this over at dvinfo, I had forgot bout here. the ae forum here is much more active :love4:.

I hope that this is just a simple process that I just dont know how to do. but I have a small project that is some text from a psd file. its only the text layer there is no background from the psd. I added a simple flashing animation to it to make it pulse a bit. now I want to export/render it (to a gif I'm guessing is best) to put on my website. I only want the text to export and not the default black background that after effects is adding. so that when its on my site all you see is the flashing text over my existing site background. please can a master instruct an ae padawan? thanks :)

You would need to add a solid the same color as your background of your website to do this, I think. I'm not that familiar with gif's, but I don't know of any web browser that supports alpha channels.

but when I do that the gif quality stinks so bad that I can see the background of the gif and that its a crappier version of the real site background. Is there a way to have better quality in my gifs then?

man this seems too complicated for what it is. someone has got to have a workflow for what I'm guessing is done all the time

Hate to break it to ya, but animated GIF's are old school and not encouraged for any kind of use. They're limited to 256 colors and need dithering to clean up the inherent color depth issues with 256 colors, plus I'm never seen a good looking GIF animation. It's much easier to do things with Flash and embed that on your page.

This is 20 frames of a 24p comp rendered from AE as an animated gif. No other post done. Scaled from an HD comp in the render panel.
There is a noise filter on the footage of the guy to add noise to the shadows, but the dithering is acceptable.

But what happens if you animate some text using the DVXuser gray as a background, I think the dithering and low color depth will not blend seamlessly into the page.

Agreed on Flash. That's the only real way to keep any fidelity in your image.... and it will support alpha info from png's, etc...
