Exporting question, I need help

I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and I export with the built-in AME.
I have exported DV footage out to Microsoft AVI and Uncompressed AVI so that I can use the footage in Vegas to edit it there and it works fine.

Where I need help is...
Recently I recorded HD 1080 on P2 on my HVX200A.

So what I do is throw all my P2 Footage on a timeline in Premiere and without touching it, i directly export it, to use it in Vegas.

When I try to export this HD footage selecting Microsoft AVI, the AME does not allow me to go any larger than 720x480

When I export it using "Uncompressed AVI" it let's me set the correct size but it makes a file that's 115Gigs! that's insane!

Does anyone know what I should do besides buying a new Mac Pro for about 15 grand?

Microsoft Avi should have let you adjust the size, you just need to toggle Preset to Custom.

It would have been a really bad idea to export using that in the first place because the compression scheme is horrible and you'll lose a ton of quality.

And the alternative is uncompressed footage so of course the file size will be huge. You're taking a lossy codec (DVCPROHD) and then rendering it out as something else. To preserve the quality of the original footage the codec has to be non-lossy, hence the huge file size.

The only way around it is through an intermediate codec such as Cineform (not sure if it's compatible with Vegas?) or Raylight which allows Vegas to work with MXF footage directly.

I was thinking about it and trying to avoid spending another $200 but it looks like I'll be better off just buying the Raylight plug.
What's harder is getting the purchase authorization from the accountant (my wife!)

Thanks for the reply!

i thought vegas supported p2 now?! ..anyway you can either use raylight, or you can get ahold of the avid DV100 codec which is essentially a dvcproHD codec and export to that, or a number of other intermediate codecs that may cost you.

..a more noteable issue for me would be ..why on earth are you editing in vegas if you have premiere with native p2 support? .. i mean im sure you have you reasons, but if youve also got AE and have compositing to do it would greatly benefit you to stay within that streamlined adobe pipeline where the support is already there and you save so much hassle and time with intermediates.

Yes, that would be the norm in a perfect world but After using Premiere for 2 years and Vegas for 6 or 8 months or so now, I am completely happy chosing Vegas Pro over Premiere any day.
I spent more time on the adobe forums trying to resolve issues than I ever spent time editing on it.

I have 2 macs with FCP, and a PC with Vegas and Premiere and my FCP setup is like so sweet I love editing in it but Vegas is just so simple and can do so much with such ease that it has really convinced me. So I do most of my work with Vegas because it gives me the best results in the least amount of time.

I do, do a lot of work in AE. All my TV spots are done with AE, but I work between AE to Vegas.
I get the faster and smoother results without going through a whole bottle of tylenol trying to kink out the bugs in Premiere.

I love vegas over premiere so much that I go the extra steps to work between Vegas and AE and still ends up being faster than working with the buggy, choosy, and picky premiere.
