This is probably an easy one for you guys...

but not for me!

My sound man wants the OMF from me so he can "clean up" the sound on pro tools.

In Premiere Pro, I can export the EDL and the AAF.... but where is the OMF??? He wants sound only... no video at this time...

Help...!!

OMF is native to protools..Even though they say you can bring it other omf files from programs like SONAR it doesn't work since OMF's for digidesign is slightly different for some reason. And Digi doesn't really care to fix the problem since this argument has been around for about 3 years. You can read the Avid forum and there are so much data about this. It is just their way of having you buy the Mbox and use their signatory market hardware. He can import in WAV files and work it there without any problem. Same goes true with OMF into Avid from other programs.

One other thing to ask your post sound guy....does he want individual tracks or just a final export. Probably he will want individual tracks. I use Vegas rather than Adobe, so this may not quite be the procedure, but in Vegas you simply mute each track except the one you want to export, and then just render it at the highest resolution possible to a .wav file. You should also ask him if he wants a 2-pop added in before you export.

Ask him if he can convert from wav. or aiff files to protools. Maybe if you had adobe audition you can convert. Try downloading the demos for 30days and see if it will be converted that way. Vegas has a demo also. There used to be a protools free version but it is really outdated and without the hardware you can't even convert it. This is why I left Avid to go to Vegas. No more nickel and dimeing for every little convenience.

Wes Plate (originator of Automatic Duck) is not connected to Avid. He saw a professioanal need and filled it. The thing that makes it an amazing program is it carries the EDs to your new program, this is not an easy thing to do. The falling prices of NLE's does make this price seem high but no one has bothered to create a program to compete with it. Plus most people that deal with software based editing do all their work in house so the "prosumer" demand is not that high.

We have more then gotten our money's worth with the FCP export and Import AE. A lot of post guys can provide this service (at a rate of course :) ).

Exporting AIFF's or WAV's isn't the same as having an OMF. OMF"s are better. As a sound editor, I completetly understand why he want's an OMF. I get OMF's from FCP all the time.

I do not think the AutoDuck OMF export plug in for PremPro has been released yet but I do know it is not far off.

I have been involved in the Beta test for it, used it on actual work and I assure you ...it will be a great assett to have in PPRO.

There really is no other way to get the audio tracks out of a NLE and into another system.

Must admit the price mentioned in the Press Release seems fairly hefty but in a pro environment it will soon pay for it self should you have the need.
