Exporting HD for Web Downloading?

I'm working with 1080i, 29.97 fps video, shot on a sony HD miniDV camera. I used Aspect HD to capture the video and will be exporting parts of the video for people to download off of a website in WMV format. The videos vary in length, anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes long each. Right now we host videos as large as 300mbs on our site, but those videos are not HD.

This will be my first time exporting HD and I'm trying to find the right mix between quality and file size. I've played around with the "average video bitrate" options. I know if I lower the bitrate, the file sizes get smaller, but then the picture is more pixelated. To counteract this, I can make the dimensions smaller then 1920x1080 (ive tried 1280x720, 1024x576, and 960x540). This is where I start not knowing what to do. What is a good size? My initial thought was that 1024x576 would be nice since the majority of internet surfers are running a 1024x768 screen resolution. Is there a standard to any of this? I want to make sure we can legitimately call these exports "HD." Any help would be SERIOUSLY be appreciated.

You'll have no problem calling something with at least 720 vertical pixels "HD". I'd use Adobe Media Encoder and WMV, just try some of those presets.

You can render out portions of your project to get an idea of filesizes. Drag the work area bar (tan bar at the top of your timeline) over just say 10% of your project, and export that with different presets. Then just multiply the file sizes by 10 to see what you'd end up with rendering the whole project.

Thanks OTL,

I'll use those ideas to reach a solution. I see you answering a lot of questions on this forum. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say it's much appreciated.
