Exporting H264 problem

I'm in serious trouble:

I've got FCP 5.1.2 with QT 7.1.5

I have a timeline of a 40 minutes edited dvcpro HD project, and am exporting it trough QT conversion to H264, 18000kb file for playback on my PS3. This has worked before, but now something is wrong. My mac is always crashing, or reporting an error after encoding. Tried exporting the timeline to a full dvcpro HD movie, than exporting from there, but the crashing continues.

The worst thing is, while my last encoding of a similar file took 8 hours, now its taking double the time, and its not being able to do it... Any suggestions? Would export trough compressor be better?

EDIT- I would also add that I'm on a G5 dual 2.7 with 3ghz ram. Using a Lacie external Sata for editing, and exporting to a Lacie external Quadra. My Mac crashed while exporting from the Sata back to the same Sata. Figured this might help. Still haven't checked (its rendering in my home studio).

Update: Crashed again, with a " Kernel" and asking " awaiting for debug"... Any suggestion?

UPDATE- this is getting annoying, and I can't find where the problem is. Tried repairing permissions. COmputer didn't crash this time, but after 16 hours encoding, reported " Failed -2125" what does this mean?

All help appreciated. This is very important to show my work...

next step- try to update quicktime from 7.1.5 to 7.2

UPDATE- Quicktime 7.2, same encoding settings. Result? Failed. This time, with a "Could not finish encode {10}" sign.

Not happy.

Try these:

When FCP Quits...

1) Trash Preferences FCPRescue

2) Repair Permissions

3) open your terminal window and type: sudo update_prebinding -root / -force

4) Unplug everything and wait

5) Create New User

Each in order of desperation.

Thanks CaptM. Will try these. Now trying a lower bit rate 12000 to see if there's any influence. Funny thing is, I had success with this encoding before. But now i'm not sure if I selected multipass or not.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "prebinding"? Also, when exporting from FCP, the computer litterally crashed, with the restart button on screen and the text saying I needed to restart. When I exported a DVCPRO HD qt of the timeline and decided to encode trought quicktime export, the computer stoped crashing, but the encode always fails after about 9 to 10 hours encoding. It never fails at the beginning. I have more than enough disk space(about 400gb), so I'm thinking this isn't the issue.

Can this still be a Preferences problem?

Thanks for the help Capt M.

Doubt it's a preference thing.

Pre-binding is what a program has to do to talk to all the intra-agencies that it uses in your mac... like Quicktime isn't just a stand alone program... it must talk to core audio, core whatever, unix etc.... Pre-binding makes sure these are all happening correctly.

That and repairing permissions.

Then turn it off and wait...

Your best bet is to try those five things in that order. Honest... should fix it.

Much appreciated. Can only test in 9 hours. Will report latter. Thanks for taking the time with this. :)

Captain, after trashing preferences, the problem persisted. I tried trashing QT preferences too. FUnny thing is that I could, after some failed attemps, encode a clip. But there's something going on always on the same places:

In minute 12 of this 38m clip, in all the successfull encodings, there's a dropped frame, or a mosaic drop that goes for about a second or 2. The same happens at the end of the encoding, which is about min 34 of the clip. This doens't happen when I output a DVCPRO HD master file, tough. Very, very strange.

Can it have anything to do with corrupt "render Files"?

I'm affraid to do this pre-binding thing... It says "Some data can be lost in the process". Can this happen?

Thanks for your time and your help, Captain Mench. I could at least output something with your indications.

Cheers
