Exporting for web viewing?

I am having a heck of a time trying to get a good quality export that is not a big file size. I need your help!

I have seen several excellent quality shorts from this site that are only around 20 mb. For a non-anamorphic picture, what is the best settings for export? What file type?

Re: Exporting for web viewing?

I have been using the Sorenson 3 codec. Just start messing around with settings. You will find what works best for you. I can't remember off hand what my settings are. My editing workstation is unplugged...I'm redesigning my editing suite...:( I will let you know when it is up.

Ahhh compression.... what you are shooting video of really determines your settings.

Sorenson is definately the way to go
I use Sorenson PRO and encode in MPEG4 (Sorenson Squeeze) which has a really good two pass VBR encoding mode. (Although it's a rather slow encoder) The quality from this setup is second to none. (It works great with skateboarding footage)

I use a data rate of 400 to 500 Kbps which will play in near realtime for MOST braodband connections.
Usually 400 for video and 64Kbps for audio. Always "de interlace" when using Squeeze unless all your footage is already progressive...

There is a GREAT article on compression for the web in the SPRING 2004 issue of Xtreme Video Magazine... which is where I learned about Sorenson Squeeze... can't live without it

Almost forgot... you will need to buy Sorenson Squeeze (you can buy the Suite which is $449 or JUST Squeeze 3.1 for MPEG4 which is all you really need and is only $199)

Re: Exporting for web viewing?

Hey thanks for the info. I will have to put that on my shopping list for some time in the future. If I didn't have tuition to pay for things would be a lot easier!

Ok, so what about if I don't have Sorenson, just good ole Final Cut. Any suggestions on what would be the best for that (good quality but smaller file size).

Re: Exporting for web viewing?

Keep in mind, you will not get the same quality without a good tool. You can come close... maybe... but if you do a lot of compression for the web, the $199 is worth it (by the way since you are a student, you can get Squeeze for $149 for the MPG4 only version... but for $199 you get the full suite which is very nice to have)

O.K. with that said... here's what I would do...
use compressor first of all (make some different preset folders to start experimenting with)

A good place to start is to create a new QuickTime encoder with the standard mov extension then in the video settings you can try some of the different option... Sorenson3 is in there, try it with the slider set to best... limit the data rate to 400kbps if you want it to stream on broadband connections, and select "progressive streaming" from the dropdown.

If that doesn't cut it for you, start playing around. Try to find an encoder that has a 2 pass VBR. 2 pass will always give better results. MPG2 encoder in compressor will give good results, but your files won't be all that small.

Good Luck
