Exporting for big screen?

Hi all,

Just curious if anyone has found the best exporting formula to dvd for big screen viewing like a film festival. I'm shooting 60i and 4:3. If it's been asked elsewhere I apologize, my search came up empty.

Well if you have FCS 2 then exporting to Compressor and DVD Studio Pro would be the best best. There's a tutorial here and I also go over it on my DVX100 DVD.

Understand that a compressed DVD blown out to a 30 foot screen will show EVERY flaw in the video and EVERY audio mistake will become VERY apparent. Also, titles can be a challenge... for DVDs you should make them a decent size, but on the big screen they will look HUGE... it's a hard trade-off...

Best Advice:
Get in touch with a local theater or auditorium and test it out before your screening...

Yup- I'd go for ProRes off a hard drive to DVI into a projector any day of the week over DVD. Or to DV tape.

What set-up do most theatres that have gone digital use? I'm sure they don't go off a DVD. Is there a standard format for digital projection yet?

Film festivals...

Film festivals...

Do most film festivals only accept submissions on dvd? Tape? I agree the hard drive would be great but I assume most festivals won't accept a hard drive.

Thanks for your replys,
Dave

Most festivals accept DVDs and VHS for submissions. However there are still a few that require Beta SP or Film for screening of you are accepted.

Noah, I am interested in how this works. Are there conflicts with applications used, video formats, projector systems? Is this an appropriate palce to discuss this?

I speak neither technospeak nor bureaucrat, but it seems like they are making an attempt at standardization.

Thanks for the link. I'll keep looking into it. Delivering content in an acceptable and professional format should be within everyone's reach.
