Exporting Confusion.

OK, I have done this over and over... am not pleased with the results. DVX100a footage. (either 24p or 30) G5 Dual 2.5 maxed out. Space is not a problem.

I want the absolute clearest file exported from FCPHD. I am a recent convert from PC/Liquid, and find the output from my work on my new 8k "super" system to be quite lower than my past work. I have tried every option I can think of, and I can still see compression artifacts when viewing the final project on TV. It is not acceptable, and know it must be something I'm doing. Besides all of that, the video -- once exported as .mov look like crap when viewing on my 23" apple screen. (Yes, I realize that it won't be as good on a monitor as on a tv, but I can download trailers from the net that look better than my 1+gig files) What gives??? Please tell me your optimum settings for exporting video to use in Dvd studio pro regardless of how much space is needed for the file.

With this camera... and this system, I would expect perfect results. Not the crap that I am currently turning out.

Help!!!

Thanks, all!
Erik.

Re: Exporting Confusion.

When going to compressor use highest quality at 60 minutes (there are presets) Use high quality discs so you don't have drop outs or other artifacts.

When outputing to QuickTime movie what format are you saving as? Some formats, such as DV, show lower quality by default so it can show at full speed. In QT Player do a get info and set video quality to Max and hit save from QT player. You should now see a difference.

You're starting with DV format which already has compression. Be careful when color correcting or manipulating not to make it worse. Make sure you exposure are correct so you get as much dynamic range as possible without post manipulation.

Re: Exporting Confusion.

What are your hardware specs? And what format are you ultimately trying to output?

At work, I can definitely see the difference in quality capturing footage via an Aurora Ignitor X Pro board... vs. firewire at home. So that could be one factor.

Next is compressions. What are you exporting?
Go to Export Quicktime Movie/advanced/settings change to "uncompressed 8/bit". or 10 bit if you really need to.

Re: Exporting Confusion.

Hardware Specs: G5 PowerPC Dual 2.5, 1.5GB RAM, NVIDIA GeFOrce 6800 Ultra, 2x250GB Serial ATA.

Path I am trying to go through -- let me know if I'm wrong. Input into FCP HD via firewire from DVX100a. Edit as needed. Tried two ways o export to .mov file: 1. Export to Quicktime movie. (4:30 clip comes out to 830MB) 2. Export using Quicktime Conversion / Setting highest (4:30 clip comes out to 1.3GB) Once each of the separate 3-5 minute 15 clips are exported, I want to bring them into DVD Studio Pro to create a DVD for viewing on VERY large screens at an event.

However, the clarity is seriously lacking, and in several of the scenes I can see serious compression issues while it is playing even on a normal TV.

Ok, I think that about covers it. I will try the listed suggestions, and am open to anyone telling me something different. In Liquid, I edited and exported as DV, so I didn't have to mess with Quicktime at all... I hear great things about it, but have not experienced it. Trust me, I WANT to be impressed... just waiting to be.

Thank you all!!

E.

Do you have compressor?

Compressor is what I use with FCP and my exports have been great.

I wouldn't think that you could get very good looking dvd products just exporting with quicktime.

Hello,

I was reading the thread from the original posted question and I am still a bit confused. I am also having quality issues when I export with QT. You mention above to use compressor but I was under the understanding tha FCP uses the compressor in the background? So are you saying that once I export my movie in QT I have to run it through compressor again?
