Exporting and Delivering DVCPro HD

A question that has me thinking for some time now is what to do when the edit is finished and I want to delivery the film.

To deliver to television in DVCPro HD you would have to rent an $18,000 deck! That's about $500 a day.

To delivery on DVCPro 50 there are decks to buy for around $6,500 .
I can't understand why Panasonic have their decks so highly priced. They even have a "studio" deck for DVCPro HD at $65,000!

Another idea would be to delivery it on a hard drive. A 60 GB hard drive would cost less than renting a deck. But it's still not extremely practical.

For event and wedding videos there will of course be Blu-ray and HD-DVD so that's just a matter of time.
Anyway, any other bright ideas out there ? :undecided

Make a self contained, full quality quicktime and take on disk to a well equiped post/dub house and get a copy made on whatever format you need. For SD it will probably be beta or digi-beta, for hd, likely hd-cam or d5. We can't possibly own decks in every format that a broadcaster may want. If it is for your local station they may make the dub for you and then return your drive. You may need to make some calls to find a place that is compatible with your system and has the output you need, but should be cheaper and less hassle than renting a deck.

It might be worth renting a deck for a day or two to master a complete season of TV, but for a one off, or something short I would use a dub house.

If you are doing HD programming for BROADCAST and haven't budgeted $500 for a DECK RENTAL for layoff, you don't have output issues....you have production budget issues.

Yeah, that's why I want to have everything worked out budget wise before I go.
The simple hard disk to post house seems pretty good.
I'll check out what post prod facilities I can find here.
