Exporting AAC / 128 kbps Audio

For some reason when I try to export my film to a .mov (or any other format for that matter) and I choose the audio section it doesn't give me the choice of any codec to use.. I can only have uncompressed audio.

Furthermore, there's no option to set the bit rate...

How can I set the bit rate to 128 kbps and use the AAC codec for my audio when exporting to a .mov?

Are you trying to export an H.264 QuickTime movie? If so, as you've discovered, AAC is not one of the options for audio. Instead of "QuickTime" in the Format drop down, select "H.264"... you'll be able to create an H.264/AAC file in an MP4 container that will playback just fine in QuickTime, as well as other players.

That does work, it gives me an mp4 with AAC. The only problem is that it's under 45 MB for a 3 minute 1080p render... which should be MUCH larger.

I am submitting this film to a contest, the limit is 500 MB so I'd like to get as close to that as possible to cram quality in.

Right now, its 45 MB with good audio but the quality looks terrible.

I think I can render something larger (LIke an uncompressed .mov or something) then run it through Quicktime Pro for the AAC audio... but there has to be a better way to get 1080p video, AAC audio and a .mov extension.... right?

If your exported videos needs to be an MP4 with H.264 and AAC, and you want the exported video to be 1920x1080, you simply need to change the frame size and bitrate settings to hit your marks. There's a file size tally near the bottom of the Media Encoder that will help you gauge your export. You can also select one of the Presets from the drop down; there are a couple for 1080 exports. Just select the one that matches your frame rate, and tweak from there.

By rough calculation, you'll need to start with a target bitrate of somewhere around 22Mbps, assuming that your video is 3 minutes in length, and you're trying to get as close as possible to 500MB. Remember to factor audio in there as well.
