Exporting a trailer to upload online...

Hey all,

I've got a 2.5 minute trailer that I need to upload to a website.

The site max is 100MB per trailer.

Issue: When I export the movie from PPRO to my desktop as a .MOV file or .AVI file... it is really large.... the .mov file is approx 2 GB!! and the .AVI file is about 550MB.

How can I compress this monster to be under 100MB, and still look good enough to preview online?

Thanks for your time,
Darryl

I've read a lot of references to Sorenson Squeeze doing a real good job at this but I have no direct experience with it myself. I'm waiting to see how well the Flash output from PPro V2 does. I need to do some web stuff later this year myself.

Have you tried the Windows Media Encoder? It gives you a lot of options for web delivery in terms of res and bandwidth. It's a free download. Problem with this is that I don't think it's quite as universal a format as QT is. I've been using it to go the other way (uprezzing) and have gotten what I think are impressive results. I take progressive footage from my DVX and uprez it in Windows Media to 720p. I think it looks pretty darn good on my computer monitor.

If you scale the output from full to half resoultion, i.e. 360x240 io 720x480 you will reduce the file size significantly. This can be done in QT Pro and you have a variety of compression options. Premiere and AE output very large QT files. QT 7Pro is a $29.95 download from Apple. Sorenson Squeeze for Windows is very good but very expensive if your not doing a lot of web compression work.

Using QT Pro I output very high quality .mov files in 600x337 (16:9 aspect) under 60mb for 2 min piece. Use data rate of at least 1200kb. This is for QT download format not streaming.

The Flash encoder with the new on2 codec is good but has limited control of the compression. The Sorenson for Flash is cheaper than the full Windows suite and offers grester control of the FLV output.

Both QT and Flash will alter the gamma and color depth of the output (generlly lighter/less color). The QT Pro and Sorenson for Flash have the ability to compensate for this .

Does it matter what compressor I use? Once it is the way I like it..... and I up load it to a site.... does the viewer need a plug in to watch it? or is it just another QuickTime movie to them?

Yes, the viewer must have a matching codec on their system to properly interpret how the data was compressed.

OH boy.... now what did I do?

I used the default compression called H.264 and had it at 1200 Kbits a sec.

Is that H.264 a very standard kind of a deal? Should I use another one?

Heeeelp!! I emailed a bunch of my cast and crew this morning to check it out....

www.mogthemovie.com is where it is at for downloading.

It played on my regular system.... who knows???

well... looks like if they have quick time 7, they can view the trailer... so, I just stuck a link on my site for them to go get it.

Hey Apple, you gonna pay me for advertising your site?? :)

If you'll be doing this often, Sorenson Squeeze is great. It gives you good control if you need it, but the presets are great and it's really easy to use out-of-the-box.

Not everyone has H.264 yet.

I've had the best compression ratio for quality experiences with WMV, but mac people have a lot of trouble playing that back sometimes. Windows Media Player for Mac sucks.

H.264 is only cpmpatible with QT 7. H.263 works ok with QT 6.5 Specify tha ver ot QT that is required and put the link to the player download.

Sorenson Squeeze is very good but also very expensive if you don't do a lot of web video projects.

I put the link on the site..... what a hassle for my peeps.... but, what the hell, only a few minutes to download QT7, to see the hottest new Indy film trailer!

Thanks again for your time and help....!!

Check this site out for a good tutorial on getting high quality at low bit rates Link
using this I can usually get sizes down to 4min at 14mb at 320x176, 22mb at 480x260, 40mb at 640x346. All at 16x9 in h.264, Sorrenson usually comes in at a slightly bigger size.
