Exporting 24p to Quicktime (.mov)

I attempted to export my 24p SD DV project to a Quicktime file (.mov) using H.264 (at 2500 kbps, best quality, 480x360). The movie came out with a strange shearing effect on moving shots similar to interlacing drag except with many fewer horizontal splits. This problem does NOT occur when I play the .mov file on my computer.

Has anyone ever seen of this problem before? What can I do to fix it? The video can be found here: www.btangonan.com
update: I encounter the same problem when I upload a flash movie to the web.

The short on YouTube

The short on YouTube

Here's the short on my homepage: www.btangonan.com

Why does the image flicker and split horizontally throughout the movie? Is this a deinterlacing issue? I exported H.264, 24 fps, No fields, deinterlacing OFF. I shot on 24p, so why would I have to deinterlace when exporting?

I need to submit this short in two days, so I would greatly appreciate any advice!

Thanks,
Brad

C'mon, guys! I have a deadline! I know there must be someone out there who has seen this problem before. I've been up and down the forums and can't find anything helpful.

Are you looking at it on a PC or Mac? My guess is that what you're seeing is a video card not handling the data very well. I see the same effect when playing QT or Flash on my PC -- watched on my Mac it's fine. Same with your video. On my PC it had the horizontal artifacts, but on my Mac they were not there. However, there was some stuttering while viewing it on my Mac (2.33 GHz MacBook Pro, so it's not the computer); I wonder if a lower bitrate would have helped YouTube play it cleaner.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try using a lower bitrate, however I'd prefer not to take the hit in video quality. I've viewed videos from other entrants in the online contest and I don't see the horizontal artifacts that appear on my video.

Is there any other export setting that might get rid of the artifacts?

I tried exporting as an .avi and then converting it in Quicktime Pro, but that doesn't fix it. The strange thing is that I don't see the artifacts when I play the original .mov video in Quicktime on my computer, only when I play it online.

Wish I could give a definitive answer, but I still don't know for sure what causes it or how to squash it. It occurs on horizontal movement, either a camera pan or when something moves horizontally across the screen. If you're going to compare other movies to yours, compare horizontal motion shots and see if there's a difference.

Still no dice. The horizontal shearing is present both on flash and QT files on the web (or in my browser loading a local page on my computer). It does NOT happen when I play the original avi or mov movies directly on my computer using WMP or QT. The artifact appears to be more frequent and noticeable in the flash version of the online video.

Strange thing is, my other short that was shot in 60i does not exhibit this strange horizontal shearing artifact as much. Could 24p having something to do with it? I'm running out of ideas.

I just put both .flv and .mov versions of my video on my homepage: www.btangonan.com
