Exporting 16x9 footage in 4x3 sequence

I have a video that was shot in 16x9 and my client wants it to be a 4x3 letterboxed video for the web. The logical thing would be to edit it natively in a 720x480 anamorphic sequence but my client has several videos that this needs to match and told me to edit it in a 720x480 sequence to match the other videos (deeper black bars). So I setup a 720 x 480 NTSC sequence and threw in the footage without having to render and finished up the edit. The exported file (quicktime H.264 medium 320 x 240) comes out stretched). I have been racking my brain as to why this is happening considering that the video in the canvas looks perfect. I have exported it a number of different ways to try to correct the image and it all comes out the same. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Not sure what DEEPER BLACK BARS means.

Ok... So does your 'client' want the whole video to have letterboxing including the 4:3 footage? If that's the case... edit it ALL in an anamorphic sequence and just resize the 4:3 to 133.33 scale and it will fill the width and lop off the top and bottom.

OK... so does your 'client' want the whole video to be 4:3 with the 16:9 looking letterbox and 4:3 full screen?

IF that is the case then yes, you need to edit in 4:3. I think though you might have some issues with aspect not looking correct in the 4:3 timeline (forget about export just yet)????

If THAT is the case... select all the clips and right click on one... REMOVE ATTRIBUTES... only select DISTORT (ONLY!!!!) -- that should get it correct again.

But again, I'm not really sure what you are asking.

I figured it out finally. It was just a stupid little error on my part. I copy and pasted the almost finished 16x9 video into the 4x3 sequence and FCP doesn't like it when you do that sometimes. So, since there is only one clip of video, I just grabbed it from the bin and replaced it. I just exported it and it looks like it is supposed to. To answer your questions, they want the video in 4x3. The video in the canvas does look a little better. This week has been one long week! Thanks for your help!

Would it not have been easier to just film it in 4:3?
If they wanted "deeper black bars", just add them in the edit and make sure you've left enough redundant frame at the top and bottom of your clips when you're shooting.
Seems like a much easier option to me

That was my exact question to them! Depending on what camera you use, you can film 4:3 letterboxed and your done. However, they wanted to film in HDV. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me but I was not involved with the project until post-production. Ce la vie!
