EXPORT to MPEG2 for DVD

How do you go about exporting your finished segment to MPEG2, I edited on a 29.97 timeline and want to export it for a dvd. Do you export it via Quicktime movie and then choose MPEG2, I can't find that as an option. I just see Mpeg4 and others. any help would be great Thanks.

Re: EXPORT to MPEG2 for DVD

Which version of FCP do you have?

What program are you planning to use to make the DVD?

This is the easy version:

File - Export - (FCP3 calls it a Final Cut Pro Movie, v4 calls it Quicktime Movie) either way, it should be the top option after the Export arrow expands.

If you've added chapter markers choose include chapter markers.
Make sure 'self-contained' move is NOT checked.

Save your file (shouldn't take very long.) Drag that onto iDVD and let it do the work for you.

If you have FCP4 and DVDSP then write back and I'll walk you through that.

Good luck,

DVX -- I agree... if you've got the couple of bucks, go for it. I still say Compressor 90minute 2-pass is the best free compressor out there.

Re: EXPORT to MPEG2 for DVD

I just started getting Quicktime Errors durning encoding using BitVice...hmm...Does it have to do with having BitVice Lite?

Re: EXPORT to MPEG2 for DVD

How does Idvd "figure it out"?

How about exporting using Compressor, on Compressor you can export as Many MPEG2 files. Why do they have all the 60.90, and 120min options.

I was looking on Idvd and it says that MPEG files aren't supported, so that means if I expoted my movie using compressor and the option 90min high quality encode, that it won't be able to run on Idvd?

Thanks

Re: EXPORT to MPEG2 for DVD

SIL --

iDVD encodes at two rates: One for 60 minutes and one for 90 minutes AND you cannot differentiate between movies. It encodes the entire disk.

iDVD also will not (as you say) let you take an Mpeg2 file converted in a 3rd party software program and import it into the iDVD structure.

So -- what you want to do is buy DVDStudio Pro. Here you can take one move and encode it at 120 minute compression (more compression, less good) and another at 90 (less compression, more good) and even a third at 60 (or any anything else too, if you want to mess with the bit rates etc.) Then you can build your dvd in DVDSP and be done with it.

My choice?

Buy DVDSP and become a DVD makin' monster! I can't tell you how many dvd's I get from people and I see the same darn iDVD menus over and over. Not really, but there you go.

Good luck,

Re: EXPORT to MPEG2 for DVD

I mean -- if iDVD thinks the disk is 60 minutes long it will encode at the 60 minute rate. If it thinks the total time is 62 minutes it will encode the entire thing at the 90 minute compression.

... and V3 is right around the corner.. a big upgrade.

of course this all changed with iDVD4...
